What is low vision?

Low vision is a broad term used to describe the partial sight that many people have. Low vision patients can range from those who are legally blind to those who have only minimal loss of vision. The most common causes of vision loss are macular degeneration, diabetic eye disease, and/or any damage to the optic nerve.

What is a low vision examination?

A low vision examination differs from a so-called "regular eye exam." The primary distinction of a low vision exam is that it comprehensively evaluates vision functioning and its effects on daily life activities. Dr. Stiles evaluates the severity and nature of the vision loss and prescribes special optical devices to maximize remaining vision.

What are low vision devices?

Low vision devices magnify, filter, or increase the usable field of vision. These devices can be as simple as a hand-held magnifier or as complex as an electronic reading device. Dr. Stiles prescribes low vision devices according to each patient's activities, lifestyle, and/or vocation. A two-week trial is offered on most low vision devices.

Does insurance cover low vision services?

Medicare and other insurances will pay for examinations by Dr. Stiles. Optical devices, however, are not covered by Medicare and other insurance carriers. Specific insurance information is available at Dr. Stiles' office.
